The Trysting Place
Tryst (n) : A private rendezvous between lovers.
My husband squeezed my shoulders as I worked, “You need to go into the rainforest.”
“No I don’t. I just need to finish this.”
“No.” he said “You need the forest. You change there. I’ve seen it. You walk deep under that canopy and you become more solid, it alters your core. It changes who you are.”
I’m blessed with a perceptive husband. He notices signs I can easily dismiss when I’m preoccupied with work, and reminds me I need to go to that still place to recharge, regain my strength and find my way again.
He also knows if I don’t rest I’ll spiral away from my peace and make it harder to return to the stillness – to the trysting place where my soul is adored.

Most people have a trysting place even if they don’t call it that. For some, it’s a trek in the wilderness, others a walk on the beach, some experience the divine while involved with a hobby. Wherever it might be, and whatever form it might take, a trysting place brings peace, a sense of connection, and an energy that recharges the spirit. What’s familiar about any trysting place is its sense of deep stillness and wisdom, and its ability to calm and soothe. It’s a wondrous and spectacular place to be.
But what if work and other commitments keep you from your walk along the beach? What if you can’t physically get to the forest, or have injuries that keep you from your hike?
The beauty of the trysting place is that it’s actually a relationship, a loving partnership we take with us wherever we go. An access all areas pass to the stillness that holds all our answers.
And just as we have to get into our cars to drive to the mountains, or prepare ourselves for a swim at the beach, we have to make an effort to reach the trysting place within ourselves. When we make an intention to respect the trysting place, to devote time to our journey there, and wear our own path to its core, the way clears and it becomes easier to arrive each time.
Remember though, when we understand that we carry the trysting place within ourselves and know our way to its secret location, we forfeit all our excuses to not meet there. Our intention then becomes the gatekeeper, but we always hold the key. <3
